Pre and Post tour for Cruises on River Rhine #1

Tour Suggestion

River Rhine – After your arrival with the cruise ship in Basel we show you the Triangle region of Germany, Switzerland and France. Discover with us traditions, costumes and delicates of Black Forest and Alsace. Afterwards you continue to Bavaria to discover royal castles and romantic lakes.

Day 1: Arrival in Basel

Your cruise ends on the Rhine in Basel today. Your tour guide will meet you there. First, you will get to know Basel. The city, which lies directly on the Rhine in the middle of the border triangle, is strongly influenced by the multicultural exchange. It is also regarded as an architectural mecca due its pioneering museum structures. Your guide will show you the city’s special points of interest during a guided tour. Afterwards, you have time to see one of the Laeckerli Huus stores. There, you can buy the Basler specialty, the Laeckerli - a gingerbread-like spice pastry - as something special for yourself or for your loved ones. Afterwards, you will get to know the border triangle from the border river during a cruise on the Rhine before you end the evening on an ostrich farm. Overnight stay at your hotel in the border triangle.

Day 2: Trip to Alsace

After a short stay in the wine-growing community of Ihringen at the Kaiserstuhl, which is regarded as the warmest place in Germany, you can experience a charming mixture of French cuisine, wines, culture and a lifelong experience in Alsace. Lovable and romantic towns such as Riquewihr / Reichenweiher, Ribeauville, Equisheim and of course Colmar are on the program. While in the town, which is characterized by picturesque half-timbered buildings, you should definitely not miss the chance to visit Little Venice and the world-famous Unterlinden Museum (Isenheimer Altar, collections of modern art). Enjoy a typical Alsatian tarte and a good glass of wine. Overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 3: Excursion to the southern Black Forest

Today, you will travel to the Black Forest. On your trip through one of the largest natural parks in Germany, you will experience breath-taking views from wild gorges and dark forests, as well as the impressive scenery of Schluchsee or Titisee and charming valleys with the typical Black Forest farm houses. See the St. Peter baroque monastery church or the former St. Blasien Benedictine abbey with one of the largest dome churches in Europe. Of course, you cannot miss the enjoyment of the world famous Black Forest Cake, and you can also taste the original cherry schnapps in the distillery. Overnight stay at your hotel.

Day 4: From the Island of Flowers to the Flying Zeppelin

A visit to the largest attraction in the Lake Constance region, the Mainau Island, is a must. Disappear in a diverse variety of plant life and admire beautiful gardens which have been carefully taken cared of with loving care. Every season has something new to offer - roses, tulips, and dahlias. Your tour guide will tell you further interesting facts about the history of Count Bernadotte and his family. Did you know that the very first test flights of the Zeppelin, that fabulous hot air balloon invented by Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, took place there over Lake Constance? In the afternoon, you will visit the Zeppelin Museum - the world's most extensive collection on the history and technology of the famous airship. Become a passenger on the Zeppelin on entering the replica of the LZ 129 Hindenburg and allow yourself to be transported back to the years 1936 and '37.   Dinner and overnight stay in the Lake Constance area.

Day 5: Allgaeu

Today you will visit an Allgaeuer cheese factory. Check out how the holes are formed in the cheese and learn about cheese production, raw materials and the optimum storage conditions. You will spend the afternoon in Oberstdorf, the southernmost community in Germany. Then the journey continues to Upper Bavaria. Dinner and overnight stay in Upper Bavaria.

Day 6: Royal Castles

An absolute must is on today's plan - visiting one of the world’s best-known buildings from King Ludwig II: Neuschwanstein Castle. The fairytale castle was built by order of King Ludwig II, but he only lived there for a few months. It is considered to be the model for the well-known Disney castle and is visited by many tourists. After the tour we will continue through the Ammergauer Alps region to Linderhof Castle. King Ludwig II liked the idyllic location of the small house and had it converted into a royal French style castle. It is particularly impressive due to its lavish interior design. Dinner and overnight stay in Upper Bavaria.

Day 7: Lake Starnberg

After breakfast, you will check out and continue on to Munich. Along the way you will stop at Lake Starnberg. You drive along the east bank to Starnberg. We will make a short stop here. Then, you will continue to Tutzing. There, you will take the ferry to the Roseninsel, where we can go to the museum. The Roseninsel was once a secret meeting place and favourite place for King Ludwig II and the Empress Sisi from Austria. The Roseninsel still attracts many guests to the island with its villa, the so-called casino, and its unique rose-splendor. Afterwards, you will continue to the Andechs monastery near the Ammersee. The Andechs monastery lies nestled in the beautiful landscape on the "Heiligenberg". There, you can enjoy a hearty dinner before heading to Munich for the next overnight stay.

Day 8: Munich – city tour, extension day or trip home
